This can work well with a shabby chic or feminine design style. You could also go with more of a tone on tone fabric. This will be very elegant but will still have a subtle touch to it.
The lines of the piece are really what is important when choosing classic furniture. This is really what will make it fit in with a specific design style or theme. At the same time you want it to be a little bit neutral. This doesn't mean that you still can't get the point of view across. You just want to make sure that it isn't so over-the-top that you really put yourself in a design box that you won't be able to get out of when your tastes change.

A modern and contemporary style can be quite interesting when done correctly. This focuses on straight lines. You really want to maximize comfort and focus in on scale. If the pieces are too large, then your room won't be classic at all. It will really become dated quickly.
Another very enduring design style is that of the country look. This is very difficult to work into a classic style just because it is so specific. You'll really want to spend your money on simple pieces of furniture and quality materials. Then you can just mix and match all of your different accessories to really create the theme.
