Emerald engagement rings are definitely outside the norm. This means that your pieces really are going to get noticed. However, you want to make sure that it is getting the attention for all of the right reasons. This is why it is so important to really invest in quality pieces but still stick within a specific design aesthetic  as well as your budget. You want it to look like an actual engagement ring instead of just a birthstone ring.

One thing that you really want to be aware of is the setting. Since you're going with a more daring birthstone it might be to your advantage to really just go with a classic silhouette by going with traditional emerald solitaire engagement rings. This way, it's really going to read as being for a wedding.

When you are talking tradition, especially when it comes to anything wedding related, you really want to check with your partner first. Your husband might really hate the idea because he has it in his head that an engagement ring should be bright and crystal-clear. At the same time if your fiancé is looking for a ring you really want to make sure that she's comfortable with having a gemstone ring. Just because something is her favorite color doesn't mean that she's ready to throw tradition out the window. You really only want to buy one of these pieces if you have mentioned or she has mentioned in the past using this in the place of a traditional white diamond ring. You can always buy her a birthstone ring for say, Christmas, your anniversary, or some other event. This is one of the most important purchases that you're ever going to make your life so you really want to ensure that you get it right.

Since emeralds are so expensive, you will probably want to add in an accent stone. This allows you to still get diamonds. You might even be able to pair it with a diamond wedding band so you get a little bit of tradition. This way your mom isn't going to freak out and you can still get the best of both worlds. Your diamonds are going to really have a lot of contrast and still get noticed. An emerald is going to look very elegant and sophisticated.

This is a natural compliment to the vintage setting. A vintage emerald engagement ring is really going to seem very stylish and it will also make a lot of sense. Colored gemstones were used a little bit more often in engagement rings back in the day so this is really going to give you that feeling. You don't have to go with a solitaire. You could find a ring with simple diamonds surrounded by filigree work. This is going to look very high end.

There are a few downsides to these kinds of pieces. The one really big drawback is that quality gems of this variety are so difficult to come by. It's not enough to just be different, you need to be different in a way that other people can still relate to. For instance if you just have a cloudy kind of really bright green stone, most people are just going to shrug their shoulders when they look at. If you have a very deep clear ring people will be grabbing your hand and wishing that they would've thought of it first.

This can also be very sentimental. It's a birthstone for May. This could relate to when you met, when you're getting married, your birthday or your husband's birthday. This is a way to put your own unique spin on the idea that engagement rings are a symbol of love. It seems like everyone uses the same symbol such as diamonds even though their love isn't the same. This is a chance to really step out of that box.

Also you’ll want to consider the actual placement. This is going to really decide how bold your ring is. For instance if you just go with a three stone ring you'd have tons of options. The center stone can be a white diamond and then the two side stones could be emerald. This is going to give you a bold look but it is a little bit more classic at the same time. You could also do the reverse with an emerald center and diamonds on either side. You could also tone this down by going with a great ring guard instead of just a traditional wedding band. This could be a ring on either side of it or just something that incorporates your entire ring by surrounding everything with white diamonds. This is going to both tone down and show off the green at the same time.
