It's a way to really create a very subtle theme in your room that is gender neutral that a lot of different people can relate to. For instance, you may have a lot of success by going with different textures such as feathers, bamboo, or willows. All of these materials really create a sense of flow in your space even if they are on one static piece. This could be the entire color palette or the focal point of your entire room. This kind of material really welcomes people into your space and can give a totally different look to your furniture arrangement.

One of the staples of a modern area rug is to find a piece that has a lot of interesting lines. This might even remind you of modern art. It can have a lot of different blocks. Each block could be a different color or even a different pattern in the same color palette. This allows you to add a lot of color into your space and tie the entire scheme of your room together with just one new piece. Common themes are swirls, dots, and lines.

Another idea is to bring in pattern. This is a lot different than the typical Oriental rug. Instead, it might feature a lot of animal prints.
