Painted Vanity Tips, Tricks and Buying Guide

You could just go out and buy a painted vanity or you could try to makeover your existing pieces into something that just looks like a high end piece. This can look modern, country, traditional or work with all different kinds of themes. It's really an opportunity to get a custom look and color palette in your room quite inexpensively. If your bathroom just feels like it needs a total renovation just try doing a few of these simple projects beforehand. Just taking away outdated wood grains can really brighten things up and make it feel very fresh and new. It might just be a way to really create something that you can live with at least for now until you can renovate it. Here are a few tips on creating these kind of pieces.

You want to be careful of faux finishes. This can end up looking messy or just confusing. Especially when you use sponge painting in a bathroom it can end up looking a little bit like mold which is probably not the look you are going for. You're really going to want to be careful and decisive. For instance if you try to replicate a wood grain it could end up looking messy and not very convincing. It could be busy. Instead, you could just paint the piece a dark chocolate brown. Then it would give you that warm and rich tone, but it really won’t cost you a lot of money. This allows you to really unify your vanity with the other elements of your space such as your molding and doors.

Sometimes simpler is better. For instance if you are working in a small space you might want to paint your vanity the same color as your walls or just a bright white that will relate to your flooring or your shower surround. This will kind of make it disappear. Not everything in your room needs to be a focal point especially if it's in a small space. The advantage to this is that you will be able to really create a simple project that will have a big impact.

Even when you're done painting there are a few things that can make your space still feel little bit dated. For instance, you might want to change out your faucet or even your countertop. Of course once you put down a new countertop your vanity will probably be there for quite a while. However when you just stop by the hardware store and check out a few of the prices as well as the general design styles you may be quite happy with your vanity when you refinish it.

There are several different options for paint colors. Of course, white is a natural compliment to a lot of design styles. Black will look modern or if you sand down the edges it can seem country. You can also bring in different shades of pale green or a sand color. This can really create a soothing and spa like effect in your home. This is important just because you do want to have a space where things are very cohesive. It's also nice to bring the outdoors in, at least with your color palette. Oftentimes your bathroom won’t have large windows or if they do you have to keep curtains on them for privacy reasons. So you can still create a little bit of a Zen like atmosphere just by the paint colors that you do choose to use.

You might not be able to decide between a painted vanity or a wood vanity. In this case, you could really just go with both. For instance, you might be able to buy some pieces that have kind of a Tuscan air to them. The advantage to this is that it will be topped with a beautiful marble or granite which can be very high end and luxurious. However, since these vanities are quite small you really don't have to spend that much money on them. These often have floral hand painting on the front and then just a basic wood grain and pattern on the rest. You could also get a country kind of look with this kind of design style. You could really stain your vanity a unique color or use different glazing effects so that the paint still shows through but then you get a country color such as green or blue in your bathroom. This can really help you to create a theme or just be a totally different look than the basic boxy vanities that are out there.

Scour the thrift stores to see if there's anything that could possibly be perked up or repurposed into a vanity. The vanity can refer to your bathroom fixture but it can also be a dressing table. If you do go with a pretty plain color such as white you do want to make sure that the piece does have something a little a special about the lines. You could find an old dressing table in a Queen Anne style and then just make it feel modern or fresh for a little girl's room or a master bedroom by painting it a bright white. This allows you to get a modern style but still looks very antique at the same time.
